TURIN, ITALY-Fiat Automotive will construct an new four-cylinder turbocharged engine for its Alfa Romeo brand that can be used for either transverse or longitudinal orientation, making it applicable for front-wheel-drive or rear-wheel-drive cars. Displacement for the new is 1.8 liters but it will generate as much as 300 horsepower, the company says.
The turbocharged four-cylinder will be built in Fiat’s Pratolo Serra plant in Italy starting in 2013 and will be compliant with Euro VI and U.S. emissions laws. The company plans a 2013 timeframe for the reintroduction of the Alfa Romeo brand in the United States, which remains the brand’s “primary objective,” Harald J. Wester, head of the Alfa Romeo and Maserati brands and chief technology officer, says.
