Dr. Carlos Escobar, a research scientist at the Quality 4.0 Institute, shares his ideas combining machine learning and quality.

Over four decades ago, the concept of zero-defects manufacturing was initially introduced by Phillip Crosby. Because of the technological limitations of the time, the zero-defects concept remained mainly a managerial tool that acknowledged the importance of quality and motivated employees to do their best to reach this goal. Today, the introduction of artificial intelligence into the manufacturing processes vastly improves upon this zero-defects vision from a technological perspective. In this talk, I introduce a new concept, learning quality control (LQC), which is the evolution of statistical quality control (SQC). This new approach allows us to solve a whole new range of engineering intractable problems.

He is the author of the book “Machine Learning in Manufacturing: Quality 4.0 and the Zero Defects Vision”, Elsevier 2023. He worked for over seven years at the Manufacturing Systems Research Lab of General Motors, Global Research and Development. He studies the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to manufacturing systems to improve quality and productivity. He has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles in top journals of manufacturing, quality, and AI. His research topic has been presented in top conferences and according to a published bibliometric study, he is considered one of the most cited and fruitful authors in Quality 4.0. Dr. Escobar obtained his Ph.D. in Engineering Sciences with concentration in AI and master’s degree in Quality Engineering from Tecnológico de Monterrey. He also obtained a master’s in industrial engineering from New Mexico State University and currently he is pursuing a master’s in Management at Harvard Extension School (HES), where he also worked as a Faculty Aide. Dr. Escobar was in the Mexican national team of martial arts and today he enjoys teaching his colleagues this sport.
